Commander of Operation Sovereign Borders

Air Vice-Marshal Stephen Osborne has over 30 years’ experience in the Australian Defence Force, including serving as the Commander of Australia’s AP-3C Orion Detachment in the Middle East.

Air Vice-Marshal Osborne has held a number of command roles including Commanding Officer 292 Squadron, Officer Commanding 92 Wing, Surveillance and Response Group and Commander Aerospace Operations Support Group.

In 2004 Air Vice-Marshal Stephen Osborne was awarded the Conspicuous Service Cross in the Queen’s Birthday Honors List for his leadership as Commanding Officer of 292 Squadron during the transition to the AP-3C Orion.

In addition, Air Vice-Marshal Osborne has served as the Chief of Staff for Surveillance and Response Group and Chief of Staff to the Vice Chief of the Australian Defence Force.

Air Vice-Marshal Osborne has held staff posts in Force Development (Aerospace), the Directorate of Personnel (Air Force), Strategic Operations Division, Air Force Headquarters, and most recently as the Royal Australian Air Force’s Director of General Strategy and Planning.

Air Vice-Marshal Osborne holds a Master of Defence Studies and a Master of Arts (Strategic Studies). He is also a graduate of both the Canadian Command and Staff Course and the Australian Defence and Strategic Studies Course.

Air Vice-Marshal Osborne is married and has two daughters.
